The MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front) has investigated terrorist activity by it's own commanders after the last Peace Talks and the Memorandum Of Agreement on Ancestral Domain broke down with no Peace Agreement. Both Muslim and Christian communities were ravaged with houses burned, multiple IED's and Bombs and innocents (including children) shot or hacked to death or badly wounded. 500,000 civilians have been evacuated since August 2008.
The MILF, one side of the PEACE negotiations with the Philippine Government, has refused to disclose the details of their own probe into the lawless rebels in the MILF. If the MILF were to bring these lawless elements out into the light of day for all to see their own judgment then it would speak highly of the MILF sincerity in working toward PEACE in the Southern Philippines. The MILF previously indicated (probably true as reported by many) that these rogue lawless MILF leaders would be tried in their own MILF military court and held responsible.
Many have stated that it is important to decommmission high-powered firearms and to begin the dismantling of non-authorized armies so that only the PNP (Police) , the Armed Forces of the Philippines and authorized civilians (CAFGU) are providing protection of peace and order in the area. The well-organized MILF army can be rehabilitated in the generous rehabilitation program in the conflict affected areas. Is this possible?
It is hard to imagine that a real PEACE Agreement can be reached with secrets kept by the MILF about the leaders of terrorist activity in the MILF and a continuation or even escalation of MILF rebellion and harm to civilians (Recent on Basilan) at the same time as agreement is being worked on by legitimate PEACE seekers of the MILF and the Philippine government.

Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Police Commission instituted Institute New Directive
The PNP and the National Police Commission instituted a new Directorate Of Integrated Police Operations (DIPO) for Western Mindanao. This body will ensure support and mutual co-operation among law enforcement, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and other government and non-government (NGO) organizations in Western Mindanao to counter Terrorists, insurgents and other lawless groups. The worthwhile goal is to promote peace and development.
Mayor Celso Lobregat, the Mayor of beautiful Zamboanga City and a strong advocate of Peace that is good for all citizens, welcomes DIPO as a way of stopping the kidnapping for ransom and other terrorist activity.
Mayor Lobregat stated recently (Daily Zamboanga Times, November 28): "We have cited the need for the creation of a special police anti-kidnapping group whose area of jurisdiction is wider than that of the existing Police Anti-Crime Emergency Response Unit"...
The Program will develop a coherent approach to fight terrorists, kidnap for ransom and human trafficking. DIPO would combat these crimes within all of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. The Mayor of Zamboanga indicated that the kidnapping terrorists have become bolder and they take victims to neighboring provinces (Basilan, where I am) . They are held in the jungle where many other regional (Such as Zamboanga City Police) police operatives have had no jurisdiction.
This DIPO-Western Mindanao would become the answer to this problem. This (hopefully) will lead to an area command for PNP (Philippine National Police) covering all areas in the region similar to the Philippine Military Western Mindanao Command. This will give a centralized cooperative effort to the police to pursue criminals and terrorists all throughout the area including Mindanao, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi Tawi. Perhaps, in this way, the escalating kidnappings and dangerous activity can be limited if not stopped.
DISCUSSION: As I understand this Program, police from DIPO-WESTERN MINDANAO could pursue these illegal activities in areas, such as Basilan, where kidnap victims are taken and other terrorist activity take place. This sounds like a rational approach to an escalating law enforcement problem. We will watch for events to unfold. The PNP and National Police Commission are to be congratulated for this effort.

UN Reports That MILF Is Stopping Using Children As Warriors
The United Nations said December 12 that the MILF has agreed to stop recruiting children as soldiers in combat. The Philippine Government is trying to protect children from this practice. The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-Generral for Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy, said "the MILF will enter into an action plan with UNICEF to stop" this use of children in war. ((STAR NEWS, December 13)
This UN Representative had just returned from Central Mindanao where she had observed first-hand measures to protect children in war zones. "The primary purpose of the UN visit was to discuss ways and means of securing the release of children being recruited by the MILF and The New People's Army (Communist NPA). She strongly recommended child protection as part of the PEACE PROCESS so needed in Southern Philippines.
This UN Representative had just returned from Central Mindanao where she had observed first-hand measures to protect children in war zones. "The primary purpose of the UN visit was to discuss ways and means of securing the release of children being recruited by the MILF and The New People's Army (Communist NPA). She strongly recommended child protection as part of the PEACE PROCESS so needed in Southern Philippines.
500,000 Displaced Civilians Due To Terrorism and War
Approximately 500,000 individuals, including approximately 300,000 children, are still displaced and living in Centers after evacuation on Mindanao currently and in recent months. There are thousands more recently evacuated due to fighting and terrorism on the island of Basilan. Tipo-Tipo has been particularly an area of evacuation repeatedly. It is reported that after fleeing most endure poor health services and unsanitary conditions. The children lose days or weeks, or even months of school. It is reported, possibly true, that ASG Terrorists and MILF hide in these evacuation Centers to avoid being located by Government Troops.The Evacuations began in Central Mindanao in August and continue until today.

Nine Labuan Kidnapped and Released On Basilan
According to the Zamboanga Times (December 10) all 9 kidnapped victims from Labuan were released by the Abu Sayyaf. Seven sand and gravel company workers and two children were taken by the Abu Sayyaf last week in Tuburan, Basilan. The relatives of the kidnapped sought help from the city government in their release.
The 9 year old girl and the Nursing Student are still held on Basilan by the ASG.(Abu Sayyaf, the Islamic Terrorists in the Philippines) Large amounts of ransom money have been demanded for their return.

Fighting has been intense near me on Basilan as well as on the Island of Sulu. Many soldiers have been wounded or killed. This is fact for I have visited these soldiers in the Hospital at WestMinCom where The Healing House has a Treatment Program for traumatized military and their families. (I am glad to report that we now have approximately 10 new volunteers to help at WestMinCom Camp Navarro Hospital who are Psychology Graduate Students) The WestMinCom (Western Military Command) Healing House has a new office which is decorated in the colors of the Philippine flag with Philippine and American flags painted on the wall. Hopefully, many soldiers and families will be helped.

I am now trying to be very careful and report accurate info or at least to say if info is given by a credible or fairly reliable source or if it may be rumor. There is no doubt that (as the only Westerner here) , at times I am given misinformation. Also, I receive info from the Marines that is over the radio from Marines in different Operations and sometimes this fresh, just happening, info is incorrect or incomplete. My goal here is to be as truthful with honest reporting of what is happening at the time in an area where there are no reporters. I wish I had a cameraman to join me in this endeavor.
An example of a mistake (which was reported incorrectly to me at the time by the Marines) is that the ambushed priest did not die in October. Claretian Priest Felimon Libot was ambushed and wounded on his way to celebrate Mass in Sumisip, Basilan. Thankfully, he did not die. The reported information on this Blog mistakenly indicated his demise.

Suspected Pakistani Bomb Maker Caught In Mindanao.
THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT ARRESTED A PAKISTANI WHO WAS RUNNING A "FRONT' WATCH SHOP IN Shariff KABUNSUAN TOWN IN MINDANAO. MUHAMMAD ALFARIZ WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON TUESDAY.
There were mortar shells, wires and other bomb making materials found.The bomber was being interrogated in connection with plots to bomb targets in Mindanao where al Qaeda linked suspects hide. Police believe that the bomber may have connections to the Indonesian based JEMAAH ISLAMIYAH.(JI)

Foreign militants who are reportedly hiding in Mindanao include Dulmatin (Indonesian) and Umar Patek. Both are thought to have been involved in the Bali Bombings by the JI. In the late 1990s the JI set up Terrorist Training Camps in the mountains of Mindanao. Reportedly, these camps were destroyed by the government. This report was mainly told in Zamboanga Today ,the local Zamboanga Newspaper.

9 year old kidnap victim moved from Libe Brgy
Nine year old Nicole Rabeche was reportedly moved from this home in Libe Brgy.(address given in the last blog entry.) It was reported by some observers that the child was seen with bruising on her arms and legs. This report has not been confirmed. She was taken on Nov. 26,th from her home in Lamitan and reportedly snatched from her mothers arms. The safety and well-being of this 9 year old is of the greatest importance. Her whereabouts at this time is not known by this writer.Usually victims are taken to Tipo-Tipo or Tuburan or other camps in the mountains on Basilan close to Lamitan.

Reported Location Of 9 year old Kidnapped Victim In Lamitan
This report cannot be confirmed by my actually seeing the reported sight but Paw Paw is usually a reliable source of information and is used by the Military on Basilan in this manner (asset) in my presence. This information is also related by others who are not willing to come forward.
The 9 year old child is being held in Lamitan at a home owned by the Jamiri Family in Libe Brgy on Nangkabingit Street.
Halik Jamiri has picked up clothes and other items needed by the child, including food, and has delivered them to this house on Nangkabingit Street in Libe Brgy in Lamitan. Halik is a cousin of the reported kidnappers and has been observed doing this transaction of items.
Paw Paw states that misinformation is being given to the Marines by an asset who is a friend of the Jamiri Family. The Marine Officer who Paw Paw reports to is out of town and unavailable to help. He feels that I might help and asked me to report this information regarding the Police in Lamitan and their involvement with the Jamiri Family kidnapping along with the named Brgy Captain of the 9 year old child. (See prior Blog entry for names)
I was not present at the taking of this child but many, many people were in the area and observed this incident in Broad Daylight.
Upon receiving this information, at the next available opportunity, I communicated with a Military (Phil) Officer what Paw Paw said. This was the response:
(1) This area of Lamitan, Brgy Libe, is under MILF control. It is on the border of Akbar municipality, also under MILF control. Therefore it would be too dangerous for a small group of Phil Military to try to get the child. Most of the Troops are fighting MILF/ASG near Tipo Tipo.
(I have been told by the Mayor of Lamitan that there is no Brgy held by the MILF/ASG in Lamitan. I have never been to BRGY Libe)
(2) The Police are known to be involved in crime, including kidnapping, in Lamitan and surrounding areas. This is not new information. They are considered to be a Crime Syndicate. (I am sure it is not all of them. Many, many others have repeatedly communicated that it is a Syndicate and unstoppable)
(3) There is other possible information and they will need a lot of time to check out all leads. This info about Jamiri Family had been given and slowly they will get to investigate them but not yet.
(4) He and others are friends of this family. He said they would arrest them if there was adequate info but not pursuing now.
I have no way to know what is absolutely true. This American does believe that if the Philippines is serious about stopping kidnappings an outside agency needs to investigate.
The Healing
House believes that someone needs to go to this location and discover if this young child is being held there. Obviously, enough troops must also go as backup. She should be taken by the Philippine Military at this point before she is raped and traumatized. This is, I believe, the option if this information is true instead of waiting weeks or months until someone pays these Terrorists money that only encourages them and buys more weapons to kill more people.

Paw-Paw (CAFGU) REPORT on Basilan Kidnapping
This CAFGU is dictating this report.
The kidnappers named here live in Lamitan and were actively involved in kidnapping of the 9 year old. I have this information and swear it is the truth. Two, who were the back- up kidnappers, are Lamitan Policemen. Their names are: SPO Faisal Alih and SPO Naser Jamiri.
The direct kidnappers are: Hadji Kabasalan Jamiri, Jay Jay Jamiri (Son), Redwan Jamiri. Nawap Jamiri, Asbi ? , Brgy Captain of Boanting, Lamitan.
This information is true because many saw and knew who took this child. Many are too afraid to speak up about these names listed here.
I will swear to this in court. I have direct evidence and I know others are afraid to speak out and tell the truth to anyone. I am therefore reporting this information that I have to Dr Lisa Pomeroy. (Signed)(Paw Paw) I am dictating this.

Poverty and Terrorism
For Islamic Militants poverty and a lack of education are useful allies. Al Qaeda In Iraq frequently recruits suicide bombers from the poorest of the poor in that country. In addition, there is a report the these ASG members pay each new recruit to join their violent endeavors. In this way the destitute can feed their children and survive poverty. The more educated, reportedly , do not usually join the ranks for money but for ideology or prestige or hatred of government.
The Jemaah Islamiyah, with links to al Qaeda, have been playing a behind the scenes role with MILF rogue Commanders Kato and Bravo according to reports from the National Security Advisor, Norberto Gonzales. (Zamboanga Today, November 26, 2008)..It was stated in reports that Kato is more JI than an MILF Leader."Kato and Bravo have long standing ties with JI.Kato has, reportedly, offered his Liguasan Marsh stronghold to the JI from Indonesia. US helps the Southern Philippines -2008 CRISIS
The US Military has poured $10 Million in infrastructure and development projects into the critical area of Sulu. This money went for 13 area centers, 14 road projects, 20 school buildings, 25 artesian wells and 8 water distribution centers across Sulu. In addition there have been many other humanitarian projects including Medical Missions and Training Seminars for military and police. Governor Tan (Sulu) signed an agreement to maintain all projects that were completed by the American Forces.
U.S.Ambassador Kristie Kenney Announced that the US is providing $2.5 milliom (Dollars) in assistance to those who have been displaced by the outbreak of violence in the War Zone in the Southern Philippines. 1,480 metric tons of US rice is being distributed by the UN World Food Program. Basilan Girl Scouts Discuss Imact Of War /Terrorism On Their Lives and Families
I was invited to the Girl Scout Jamboree Camping Gathering of The Basilan Girl Scouts and enjoyed a lunch, campfire and program with wonderful kids camped out close to the Healing House Hospital.

and me to discuss life in Tipo. The were bright, open and caring young ladies who shared honestly with us about the impact of Peace and Order issues in Tipo Tipo where so much fighting, terrorism and the camps of the Abu Sayyaf exist side by side with a farming community of civilians. The Girls described how school was interrupted by evacuations. They talked about fear felt by their families and themselves. They felt that life would be wonderful on this beautiful island of Basilan if only the fighting and ASG would be gone from there communities. Poverty is major problem, they said, but if Peace and Order ruled the issues of poverty could be handled because there are so many natural resources and food, etc, due to the richness of the soil. But with the war it is very difficult for people to function well.
All the Girls are in school and hope to go to college. Three hoped to be doctors , one a nurse and others computer experts or business women. All hope to leave the area due to the conflict and difficulties. All wanted to participate in making life better in their communities. All Muslim young women hoped to get married, have a career and make a difference in their country. We were impressed with them and I believe Scouting is a marvelous Program that has much to offer the children of the Conflict Area of the Philippines.

Children Of Southern Philippines : The Real Victims Of Terrorism And War
According to the Philippine Inquirer (October 28th, 2008) the Commission On Human Rights has described the evacuation centers for children as "deplorable". Children are approximately two-thirds of the 500,000 (or more) people forced from their homes due to fighting and terrorism in Southern Mindanao. It is said that superficially the children laugh and play but at night comes the trauma. (nightmares, fear, insomnia, crying, etc)Many more than the half a million civilians are affected horribly by the War. Trauma related symptoms are rampant.
Frequently the children have no mats, bedding or pillows and most are in open areas and are covered by insect bites.A few can still go to school and they are the lucky ones for some schools have running water and the children can bathe at school. Those children left all day at the evacuation centers are dirty and many have skin diseases.
Many return home only to hurry back to the evacuation center when either danger and conflict or fear overtake the family. The Department of Social Welfare, the Military, The Dept Of National Defense and other Agencies are assessing whether most or all families can return home safely by the end of the year. No matter what, the atrocities and dangerous experiences of so many children will stay with them for a long time to come. Diagnosable Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is expected in a good number of these displaced children. Hopefully, help will be available to those in need in the future.

Abu Sayyaf Growing marjuana ...Said to be involved in"narco-terrorism"
In Maimbung, Sulu, the Marines and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency uprooted 100,000 marijuana plants that were at least eight feet tall. The Terrorists are thought to be moving in the direction of Afghanistan and other countries populated by Terrorists that fund their purchase of weapons , equipment and supplies by selling large amounts of illegal drugs. Some believe that this discovered plantation of marijuana may be the tip of the iceberg of unknown drug selling by the Abu Sayyaf who live away from cities out in the mountains or hinterlands.
This operation was apparently carried out like a combat mission against the Abu Sayyaf. Civilians gave the tip of this illegal drug operation to the Marines.

Child Warriors-Recruitment of Children as Terrorists
It is reported that The Commission On Human Rights has asked the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to inspect its own camps for it has frequently been said that children as young as 8 years are fighting with the MILF extremists (this is also rumored to be true of the Abu Sayaff Terrorists and the New Peoples Army (communists rebels)in the Philippines.)

A Way To Peace: Understanding Followers and Beliefs Of Islam
An article printed in the Daily Zamboanga Times on Sept. 15, 2008, helped me to understand Muslims and the similarities and differences with the other major religions of the world. Let me briefly make a summary of the author,Charlie S. Apostol,AlHajj's work.
There are two billion followers of the Holy Qur'an which makes Islam the world's largest religion. Muslims are found all over the world but especially in Asia and the Middle East. Followers of Islam are called Muslims and all Muslims believe in one God called Allah.
The basic message of Islam is submission only to God. Muslims believe that God revealed his message to Prophet Muhammad and also to the prophets who came years (Centuries) before Muhammad including Adam, Moses, Noah, Abraham and Jesus. The Qur'an is flawless and the guidelines are thought to be the final Revelation of God to Mankind through the words of Muhammad.
There are five fundamental tenets of Islam called the Five Pillars.
(1)Only God is worthy of worship
(2)Five Daily prayers are basic and also there is an Islamic belief in angels.
(3)During the month of Ramadan all Muslims fast from dawn to dusk
(4)Charity must be given by Muslims out of a pure heart.
(5)All Muslims must attempt to make one trip to Mecca during their lifetime. (during the month of Dhul Hijjah)
Muslims believe in the Scrolls of Abraham, the Christian Old Testament (Tawrat sent to Moses) and the Psalms of Christianity.
Muslims believe in the New Testament (Jesus, Son of the Blessed Mary) and in the

Kidnapped Victim (NGO Worker) Freed on Basilan
Good News!!!! The second kidnapped NGO Worker who had been held on Basilan by the Abu Sayyaf has been freed after a 1 million Peso Ransome was paid. Merlie Mendoza was taken with Esperancita Hupida on Sept 15 on Basilan near Tipo Tipo . They were helping the poor people of the area when they were kidnapped with others on Basilan. (Hupida was recently freed) Unfortunately Humanitarian Workers are at great risk here on Basilan. (Of course any foreigner is a prized abductee and thanks to the Marines I am being kept safe)
The only kidnapped victim being held is the young male student nurse who was taken from his home in Zamboanga City and transferred to Basilan terrorists. The location of where he is being held is unknown and unconfirmed at this time.

UNCONFIRMED: Abu Sayyaf attack US Troops on Basilan
American Forces are in the Southern Part of the Philippines as Advisers to the Philippine Military and to offer humanitarian aid to the poor and those in the war-torn areas. Americans are not allowed to fight or go on Missions with the Philippine Military.(Philippine Government Mandate). Very few troops are in the Philippines from America and they greatly help the folks in need .
I was told the day of this event that it had occurre4d but did not want to report it on this Blog until confirmed.(Still NOT CONFIRMED) The American Military were on their way by boat to an area close to Tipo Tipo (near Healing House on Basilan). The Americans approached the landing in Brgy Bohelebbong in order to offer more Humanitarian Aid. The Abu Sayyaf Terrorists (Connected to Islamic International Terror), (incident reported by multiple Philippine Military)
attacked the troops on the boat. The ASG were hiding up in Mango trees up above the docking area. One US Soldier was hit in the chest (reportedly) by gunfire but the US protective gear kept him from being injured. REPORTEDLY, As the ambush continued the Philippine Marines attacked the ASG. The US Troops left on their boat. REPORTEDLY, no American was injured. However the encounter near Tipo Tipo, reportedly. continues. There is also reported fighting between ASG (Abu Sayyaf) and military troops in a BRGY near Isabela, Basilan.
. One ASG is reportedly dead and there are wounded on both sides. More Philippine Marines left to fight in this conflict area yesterday. There are reportedly many troops fighting on both sides. Usually the ASG withdraws (Runs Away). No follow up info at this time. The Americans are reportedly back on the Philippine Marine Base here on Basilan... American Military have not confirmed this report of attacks on Americans....This report only came via the Philippine Military Forces on Basilan.
So frquently these incidents (Usually with Phil. soldiers or civilians, not American soldiers)) go unreported because no news folks ,ie Reporters, are in the area to communicate what is happening in Conflict Areas. Al Qaeda linked Abu Sayyaf Free Kidnapped Victims on Basilan. (Two still Held)
The kidnapped nurse held by Islamic Terrorist since July 7th was released after4 months of captivity.Payment of a hefty ransom was made. Preciosa Feliciano, 24, was released in Basilan late Friday according to the November 9th,2008Philippine Star News. She was released in Al-Barka town ( I have met the Al-Barka Mayor).The payment was originally P1.5 million (as agreed upon) but The Terrorists refused to release the nurse without more money being paid.So an additional amount was subsequently paid. Two other kidnapped victims are still being held on Basilan. An NGO Worker, who was helping the people, Millet Mendoza, and nursing student, Joel Pilangga, are both still held by the Abu Sayyaf on Basilan. Pilanga was kidnapped in Zamboanga a month ago and brought (sold) to the ASG Terrorists on Basilan...Mendoza was kidnapped in September with other NGO workers in Basilan.

the request for a U.S. School to adopt an elementary school on Basilan for the
exchange of letters and a gift of school supplies that are needed here.

Continuation of prior Blog
ASG Acts in past:
(6) The May 27, 2001 kidnapping of 20 from Dos Palmas Resort on Palawan. This included three Americans. One was beheaded, one was killed in a gun battle and one survived a year of captivity by Terrorists. Gracia Burnham wrote In The Presence Of My Enemies about her captivity and currently heads up the Martin and Gracia Burnham Foundatiom....(see prior blog entry)
(7)The beheading of 10 civilian men and the shooting of the 11th who fought back in 2001. The beheadings on Basilan followed the kidnapping of men, women and children from their homes. The were marched through the jungle after the ASG burned down the school. The wives were raped , the men killed and after 3 days the living captives were released. Two wives and one child have testified in court against these terrorists.(in spite of many death threats). They have been very brave and are in need of school supplies and tuition costs.
(8)The Lamitan Seige in June 2001 where many were killed. The hospital and Catholic Church next door were attacked and one house was burned. (Eventually more will be written here about this based on written official statements in Lamitan of the Seige)
(9) The 2007 beheading of Philippine Marines after they were tortured.
(18)The 2004 (February) bombing of the Super Ferry leaving Manila and at sea. 63 were dead and 53 were missing.The ASG claimed that this bombing was completed by a suicide bomber. (I have successfully treated 2 adults and one youg child who lost everything in this tragedy, but they did survive. They all were suffering from PTSD.)
(11)The killing of a large group of Marines who were invited to a wedding and instead it was a murder plot.

Civilians were hacked with bolo knives.Homes were burnend and there were bombings of markets, hotels, municipal buildings,,churches, buses, movie theatres etc. Attempts were made to bomb elementary schools but the bombs were discovered.
(14)THE FORCED EVACUATION OF 500,000 CIVILIAN CITIZENS OF CENTRAL MINDANAO.THIS WAS THE RESULT OF ATTACKS ON CIVILIANS BY COMMANDERS Bravo and Kato. They are MILF but many think there is no difference between the two groups.

why this blog?
There are several reasons to write :
(1) It was suggested to me that a blog would be a great way to try to help those with no knowledge of conflict and terrorism in the Southern Philippines. People may recrive a first hand account and a bit of history of what is currently happening in this area of the world. As an American I am particularly intersted in the Western World learning more if possible. My friends and colleagues seem interested, especially since there have been no or very few Westerners (Civilians) in this area for yearss.
(2)There may eventually be interest by some news service (paper or Cable) in this communication from S.E. Asia. Terrorism,abuse, conflict and trauma are much more apparent here on the ground than can be understood from afar. The intimidation of local Christian and Muslim people who wish to live in peace is unfathomable. The numbers who have been kidnapped, raped or forced to pay large on-going sums to terrorists is remarkable. Almost every person has a story to tell of a bombing or a kidnapping. Some believe this is more criminal than terrorism but when towns are threatened that their filling stations are going to be bombed, when collages are bombed and children are kidnapped from their front lawns I strongly believe this is terror reigned on a whole population of civilians. How to end terrorism? This is far out of my area of expertise but I do have expertise in trauma and this group of women, men and children, who are not professional soldiers,are traumaized beyond belief. Help is needed to bring PEACE to an area of the world torn by conflict, rebellion and terrorism. Trauma is the name of its impact. (PTSD)
(3) There are tremendous needs for help in the form of school supplies, toys, food and support for tuition for kids to go to school.(Public school has a tuition cost).Some children are hungry. Some children are traumatized. Many adults and children need help. America is doing a fine job of helping with infrastructure projects which are badly needed. The US Military along with the Philippine Military are doing a fabulous job of helping build schools, roads etc. But the poor traumatized individuals, especially children need a great deal of help, encouragement and basic needs for an education. Perhaps some who read the blog will be willing to offer assistance to the Healing House's attempt to help the children and their parents. (1) It was suggested to me that a blog would be a great way to try to help those with no knowledge of conflict and terrorism in the Southern Philippines. People may recrive a first hand account and a bit of history of what is currently happening in this area of the world. As an American I am particularly intersted in the Western World learning more if possible. My friends and colleagues seem interested, especially since there have been no or very few Westerners (Civilians) in this area for yearss.
(2)There may eventually be interest by some news service (paper or Cable) in this communication from S.E. Asia. Terrorism,abuse, conflict and trauma are much more apparent here on the ground than can be understood from afar. The intimidation of local Christian and Muslim people who wish to live in peace is unfathomable. The numbers who have been kidnapped, raped or forced to pay large on-going sums to terrorists is remarkable. Almost every person has a story to tell of a bombing or a kidnapping. Some believe this is more criminal than terrorism but when towns are threatened that their filling stations are going to be bombed, when collages are bombed and children are kidnapped from their front lawns I strongly believe this is terror reigned on a whole population of civilians. How to end terrorism? This is far out of my area of expertise but I do have expertise in trauma and this group of women, men and children, who are not professional soldiers,are traumaized beyond belief. Help is needed to bring PEACE to an area of the world torn by conflict, rebellion and terrorism. Trauma is the name of its impact. (PTSD)
(3) There are tremendous needs for help in the form of school supplies, toys, food and support for tuition for kids to go to school.(Public school has a tuition cost).Some children are hungry. Some children are traumatized. Many adults and children need help. America is doing a fine job of helping with infrastructure projects which are badly needed. The US Military along with the Philippine Military are doing a fabulous job of helping build schools, roads etc. But the poor traumatized individuals, especially children need a great deal of help, encouragement and basic needs for an education. Perhaps some who read the blog will be willing to offer assistance to the Healing House's attempt to help the children and their parents. Gracia and Martin Burnham-the Kidnapping of these U.S. Missionaries by the ASG
Husband and wife were long-term missionaries to the Philippines. You may read about them in Gracia Burnham's book,In the Presence Of My Enemies. As she wrote about her year captured by the ASG, Basilan is an island where"fear and chaos have become the daily reality" (p.81)because of the terrorists. The ASG that captured and held the 20 hostages included: Khadafi Abubakar Janjalani (whose house is near the Healing House location), Ismilan Hapilon who was second in command to ASG leader Janjalani, and Solaiman who was an engineer from a very wealthy family. Also, Abu Sabayo was the spokesman to the media. Abu Sabayo made Martin make a statement to the Radio Station in Mindanao which was friendly to the ASG. Sabayan wanted Martin to say that they were captured by the Islamic Movement but changed the wording for Martin. Martin was told to say that the "Osama bin Laden Group" had captured them. This was before 911 and before most of the world had heard of bin Laden.Gracia Burnham reported this. Martin was eventually killed in a shootout.
Martin was a pilot, bringing me3dication and food to remote areas of the Philippines in his Cessna. He had been offered a promotion by New Tribes Mission.Martin left for the USA to discuss this proposition.Upon his return he and Gracia planned a romantic time at t6he exclusive Dos Palmas Resort on Palawan Island to celebrate their wedding anniversary.The beautiful cottages are built on stilts out over the water.Their three children were left with neighbors in the Philippines.
On May 27, 2001, a loud banging on their resort door resulted in the ASG terrorists breaking into their room with M16s. They were hurried out the door to a 35 foot speed boat with a total of 20 hostages all taken from the expensive cabins over the water as well as two security guards and the resort cook.The Burnhamssoon realized that their captors were Islamic Terrorists (ASG) who had previously kidnapped another American who was Muslim and African American. Mr Jeffrey Schilling had believed as a Muslim he could help the ASG understand the Koran and that terror tactics were not allowed. Naiivel he attempted and was caught as a kidnapped victim until he escaped from his handcvuffs seven and a half months later.
Another Ameriucan was kidnapped with the Burnhams. Guillermo Sobero was a contractor from California who was with his fiance, Fe.All the other captured victims were Philippine citizens who could afford the pricey resort on Palawan. The youngest victim was R.J.,age 8 years.
For five days and four nights the kidnapped and thei Islamic captors lived in primitive conditions on the boat as they sped on the Sulu Sea. Eventually the boat landed to the cry of "Allah akbar" from more ASG waiting on land. The group of 20 HOSTAGES LANDED ON THE HEALING hOUSE ISLAND OF BASiLAN. BASILAN WAS IN 2001 AND CURRENTLY is A HOME BASE AND WELL-POPUKLATED BY MANY ABU SAYYAF.

In the meantime three hostages did not fit into the jeepney (*bus that is small). Two of the hostages were beheaded and the third escaped aftrer a "botched" beheading attempt. Yhe third American from California ,contractor Guillermo Sobero, was beheaded.
The Philippine Military (not Marines) began to fire on the ASG in the hospital.The ASG did not believe that the Phil. Military would have a gunfight at a hospital (next to the church) that was filled with patients. They believed that the hospital would be a safe place for negotiations for much ransome money.
I have lived at the Guest House of the former medical director and his wife of this hospital.There was an attempted kidnapping of this physician and his wife, reportedly to care for the kidnapped and the ASG. Their trauma during the Lamitan Seige (as this conflict is called)is palpable and I believe they, as so many, suffer from the trauma even today.

(CONTINUE from prior) The ASG were funded by al-qaeda (A.Q) in the 1990's.Mohammed Jamel Khalifa, Bin Laden's brother in law funded this terror group in the beginning.
Khalifa met with the ASG on Basilan. He is thought to be the main source of ASG's funds. He paid for and built a Mosque and Islamic schoolwhich is fairly close to the Healing House on Basilan.

UPDATE October 20,2008
There is an unconfirmed report of the ambush and killing of a priest and his military escorts on Oct 19. This was told by the Marines. Also, a Marine is hospitalized in the Hospital where the Healing House is located. He was hacked on the neck with a Bolo knife unexpectedly by the Abu Sayyaf at Campo Uno. Double Red Alert continues here on Basilan. The Marines continue to give me 24 hour body guards and I am OK.
The home next to where I am staying is the location where kidnapped Americans (BURNHAMS) were taken and given fresh clothing and allowed to bathe during the Lamitan Seige. This couple were American Missionaries in the Philipippines who were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf from a resort on Palawan. Many others were also kidnapped at the time, including one American man who was beheaded and a also a Japanese woman . Martin Burnham was eventually killed but his wife survived and resides in the USA. They were held for over a year and the hardships are almost unbelievable. Reporting of Terrorist Activity
There are not reporters (as far as I can tell) on Basilan where I am located in The Healing House. The Press in Zamboanga reports some events but much is kept silent. Therefore it seems that there is an absense of knowledge of some of what is being written on this Blog. The Weat seems to not be either aware of the struggle against Terrorism in the Southern Islands of The Philippines...Sulu, Basilan, Tawi Tawi and Southern Mindanao. In the Philippines many believe that most violence is in Zamboanga City when, in general, This beautiful City is relatively safe. I will continue to write what I observe and understand. There must be any parts of the World living with this kind of TRAUMA.

Basilan Kidnap attempts were interfered with by Marines.
2 Abu Sayyaf Terrorists Sub Leaders surrendered to the Marines on Sulu.
Police and Military are ready to conduct rescue operation for the two
NGO social workers kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf Terrorists. Abu Sayyaf wanted 1 millin pesos for Proof Of Life for Workers who were helping people on Basilan. Kidnapperrs demand 5 Million for the release of one worker. Worker reportedly ill and needs to be in the hospital. Esperanza Hupida told Sakalahul, Vice Governor of Basilann by phone, that she was very sick according to The Philippine Star Newspaper on October 11th, 2008.
Bomb placed under the house of Moore Jimlani in Brgy Sibuad Proper.
4 children in house traumatized when bomb exploded which destroyed the house . Reportedly bomb placed by Abu Sayyaf. (being Investigated)
Many are writing in newspapers that the MILF commited so many atrocities under the MILF Commanders Bravo and Kato in Central Mindanao and other areas that the MILF should be considered a Terrorist Group just like the Abu Sayyaf (ASG), Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), and Al-Qaeda. All these groups are connected to International Islamic Terrorism. Rogue MILF continue bombings, kidnappings and burning and killing of civilians and their property as well as using civilians as human shields.
Bomb was discovered and detonated in Lamitan, Basilian. Bomb exploded about two or three blocks from The Healing House There was only one person hurt in the explosion.Bomb was placed outside a grocery store inside a container . A bypasser astutely noticed a light flashing and immediately reported it to the Marines. Once again the Marines kept many from being injured by this bomb.
Reports by Intelligence sources that Abu Sayyaf have plans for a major assault on Lamitan City, Basilan, ARMM. Marines are extremely prepared for such an attack with Military in great numbers protecting the town.
Reportedly the Nurse previously kidnapped is held on Basilan and is pregnant as a result of rape by the Abu Sayyaf Terrorists. This has not been verified but sources are reporting. In the past women have been gang raped when kidnapped until the agree to become Muslim and marry a terrorist. This has been told to me by women who have been kidnapped by the Terrorists. Many have had this horrible trauma but do not report it due to shame for the woman and the family. Therefore, many kidnappings of women are not disclosed.
Only recently have I come to understand that when a Demand Letter (See Prior Letter on this Blog) is given by the Abu Sayyaf Terr0rists and a payment is made, the payee also has to make a further commitment to help the Terrorists. This can be food, medical care or any other need that the Abu Sayyaf has. Those who refuse to pay may find their home or work place bombed or their child kidnapped. In my opinion many (both Muslim and Christian) are intimidated and live a life of fear. This beautiful part of the world is devestated by the dangerous criminal actions of Terrorists who will hack children to death with a Bolo and use children and women as a protective shield to escape from the military and police.(See prior updates about actions....most reported here is accurate....the one exception is the report of 1000 children in a school when the number was roughly 34)
God help the victims of Terrorism and hopefully this ongoing daily Terrorist activity will never arrive at the shores of the USA. Please Pray that the Marines continue to protect me and I avoid kidnapping. God Bless The Philippines and GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Terrorism in Mindanao
Two social workers kidnapped on Basilan. They were volunteers with a NGO helping the people. Originally 10 were taken by the Abu Sayyaf Terrorists. near Tipo Tipo. Some escaped or let go.
Unexploded bomb at Northwest Elementary School in North Catabato and also found at Pilot Elementary School in M"lang
Bomb found in Market in Kidapawan City and also at highway crossing in Tacurong City
MILF burned 16 houses,one Health Center and a Day Care Center in Mamasapano town, Maguindanao
2 children, ages two and three, kidnapped in Sulu. Instead of paying large ransome the parents contacted the Marines who rescued the two boys with no money paid to Abu Sayyaf Terrorists who are connected to International Islamic Terrorists
500,000 civilians are now displaced from their homes although some have been been able to return home
Civilians including women and children have been killed. Some hacked to death by Terrorists. Some casualties of Military fighting against Rebels. (Terrorists)
Eight documented attacks by MILF on hotels, bridges, and energytransmission facilities (Zamboanga Times, Sept. 23, 20o8)
MILF bombed a passenger bus, two public markets and a hotel successfully
Four suicide bombers attempted to enter a military base. Three were reportedly captured.
No detonation.

This is a copy of terrorist letter (Abu Sayyaf) written in Tagolog that was handed to my marine body guard by two men non motorcycles. This letter is signed by the Abu Sayyaf Leaders of Basilan.The letter states that you have three (3) choices
- Become Muslim in 15 days
- Pay Islamic tax
- You will suffer at the hands of ASG
You are to call the numbers to give your answer.

The Basilan Healing House continues to treat victims of Terrorism in Southern Mindanao, Philippines. The volunteers and Dr. Eleanor Lisa Beyea Pomeroy, CEO, have delivered school supplies, toys, juice and cookies to three villages on the ARMM (Autonomous Region Of Muslim Mindanao).
The most recent delivery of gifts from the Healing House included school supplies for 6oo elementary children in BRGY Balobo. In addition, toys, juice and cookies were given. The adults received soft drinks. This area was affected by terrorism caused by the Abu Sayyaf, the local group of terrorists connected to Al Queda.
Eleven of the local Christian men were kidnapped with some of their wives and children. The men were beheade3d and several women were raped after the group of 40 (reported number) stormed homes for victims and burned down the school. The women and children were released, shocked and traumatized in a neighboring BRGY. This occurred in the early 2000's but the villages, and especially the victims, are still suffering. Several of the wives whose husbands were beheaded and one mother of two sons and one son-in-law who were killed have bravely testified in court against some of the Islamic terrorists. (In spite of reported death threats)
The Healing House has provided on-going group therapy to the family members including children, parents and wives. The group has been extremely emotional and the gratitude is amazing. They collectively feel that their story has never been told and that understanding and help has been very limited. The BRGY is anxious that there will be a repetition and the horror of the mutilation of the men's bodies cause nightmares and PTSD symptoms for many. We are trying to help and held a meeting of nearly 900. I spoke about the trauma of terrorism and how to help recovery. One of my body guards (Marines) spoke to the audience about how to be safe if such an attack occurs again. There were about 300 adults present and they seemed to respond favorably. The group of kidnap victims and relatives continues each day.

The BRGY is anxious that there will be a repetition and the horror of the mutilation of the men's bodies cause nightmares and PTSD symptoms for many. We are trying to help and held a meeting of nearly 900. I spoke about the trauma of terrorism and how to help recovery. One of my body guards (Marines) spoke to the audience about how to be safe if such an attack occurs again. There were about 300 adults present and they seemed to respond favorably. The group of kidnap victims and relatives continues each day.

This last week on Basilan Island what I am terming, "The Children of Terrorism". In a Christian community called "Little Cebu" the Abu Sayyaf (ASG connected with A.K.) terrorized the homes/people on their way up the mountain after bombing a local college in a town of Basilan.
For a time period of more than thirty minutes these Islamic Terrorists (after setting off the bomb) strafed the homes and small church of "Little Cebu". The families laid on the floor crying and praying as machine gun fire and grenades were lobbied at these innocent men, women and children. Houses were damaged but no people were killed (only animals). One woman, on the floor terrified, phoned the Mayor on her cell phone. The Mayor verified this story. He could hear machine gun fire blazing as the mother asked for help. The Philippine Military came later after the Abu Sayyaf had left. The issue is that there were a large number of well armed terrorists at the time and a battle with them would have easily caused the death of many civilians. Better to go after them in the mountains away from the civilians. This was explained to me.
The Healing House handed out toys, juice and cookies to over a hundred children. We gave soft drinks to the adults. I discussed their feelings with them and my Philippine Marine Body Guard gave them suggestions about how to keep safe if and when another attack occurs. About 200 traumatized folks attended the meeting.
Next week the Healing House will hand out toys, juice and cookies to a Muslim community with about 50 children. Again we will discuss how they are feeling. About six Philippine Marines and one body guard will go with me on these outings and we hope to visit one Muslim or Christian Village each week. The Healing Houses located in the Philippines

Thank you so much for your support and belief in the International Healing House, Inc., a Non-Profit Corporation (#260613027) in the United States.
The Healing House Philippines, Inc., is a NGO offering psychoanalytic psychotherapy for trauma victims. The first Healing House in Gingoog, Northern Mindanao Island, is a lovely home that offers an outpatient Autism Clinic for Children, as well as treatment for battered woman and abused victims.
Our second program is the Basilan Healing House which is operational in a War Zone. Philippine Troops are fighting the Muslim Terrorists, the Abu Sayyaf (ASG), MILF and JI, nearby. Basilan is part of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The Basilan Healing House Outpatient Trauma Clinic is located in the St. Michael's Hospital, the site of Lamitan Seige. I am, reportedly, the first American civilian to return to this island since the American Missionaries were kidnapped min 2001. The Americans, the Burnhams, were held in a bus outside the hospital as the Abu Sayyaf attempted to kidnap the Philippine MD and Nursing Staff; the purpose was to care for the American (he was later killed) who had hurt his foot marching through the jungle with the terrorists. My hospital office looks out on a sign noting the escape route of these Abu Sayyaf after the Lamitan Seige. We have RN and Social Work volunteers to help the Healing House Clinic on Basilan. Many patients have come for treatment due to PTSD.
The Philippine Government has on-going Peace Talks with the MILF, but the Talks recently broke down. There was a bombing in Zamboanga yesterday by an Islamic Group. The bomb exploded at the Air Force Base; it killed three civilians and wounded seventeen. There was also a kidnapping here a few days ago. This week I am in Zamboanga. Usually I am on Basilan Island.
Obviously, there are Muslim and Christian children as well as young and old victims who are traumatized, displaced and need of help. There is War against Terror here but the American Military are invited guests in the Philippines. Therefore, U.S. Forces are advisors only and also offer humanitarian aid. No Americans are fighting.
The third Healing House is in the Philippine Military Hospital in Camp Navarro, West Mindanao Command (WESTMINCOM) in Zamboanga City. This is a Trauma Clinic inside the Military Hospital for the wounded soldiers. I am Co-Directing it with Colonel "Joy" P. Turla. She is an MD and Commanding Officer, the AFP General Hospital, Western Mindanao Command. We are setting up a group therapy and clinical office in the hospital. I will furnish it and make it very comfortable. (in case you are wondering... all is with U.S. recognition). We have local MA Psychologists who are helping as well as marvelous Nursing Staff.
Our fourth Healing House Program maybe located in Jolo, on the Island of Sulu, an ARMM area. I have visited General Sabban and hope to shortly return to stay on the Philippine Marine Base in Jolo. Perhaps we will set up a Healing House Trauma Center in a Jolo Muslim Hospital. This is only a possibility but treatment for PTSD should be provided inside the Base for Marines and civilians. The fighting in Jolo has been intense.
So, we currently have three Healing House Clinics/Programs in Mindanao. They are in Gingoog, Basilan and Zamboanga. Pretty good for a tiny, barely funded U.S. Non-Profit Corporation that became a NGO in the Philippines! Thank you so much for your loving support. And all future help would be so appreciated. Psychoanalytic thinking about terrorism/war and trauma can make a difference in Third World Countries being terrorized by Islamic Extremists who are killing civilians, the innocent victims of the psychological warfare. And, this is a Psychological War with very few physical victims but massive numbers of psychologically traumatized and intimidated men, women and children. ( I have many stories!)
The Healing House Psychoanalytic Program is a frontier in Third World Countries which lack a sophisticated way to reflect on Terror or treat PTSD. There is an absence of psychological thinking resulting in an opportunity for psychoanalytic help to both individuals and the leadership in Third World Countries.
